How to Choose the Perfect Hairstyle for Your Wedding
Looking for the perfect hairstyle for your wedding? Before you begin leafing through endless hair catalogs, ask yourself these important questions.
Hair Up or Hair Down?
To settle this age old question, consider how you feel on Saturday night when you're dressed to kill. Do you tend to be more confident with your hair up or down? Do you think you look better with lots of hair framing your face, or do your best features seem to be more prominent with your hair pulled back? If you can't decide, try taking a few selfies with your hair pulled back. Many women feel that their faces look thinner or softer with their hair down. If your heart tells you that an updo may leave you feeling too exposed, there are plenty of longer hairstyles that embody grace and elegance. Go with your gut feeling.
Elaborate or Simple?
Some like the look of curls pinned at the top or back of the head. Others like the simple and streamlined look of a neat bun. Still others prefer strategically braided updos. It all comes down to preference. If you prefer a more sculpted and elaborate look, go for curls. If simple elegance is more your style, go for a sleek ballerina bun or expertly twisted braids.
Defined Curls or Loose Waves?
Sculpted styles with defined curls will tend to stay in place better than loose waves, which can droop or fall by the middle of the night. Sculpted curls can be molded into place with hairspray. Waves aren't meat to look sprayed. They're supposed to be naturally soft and bouncy. If your hair LIKES to be naturally soft an bouncy, waves can last an entire night. If your hair likes to be frizzy, waves may acquire that old famllliar fuzzy look the moment you begin sweating on the dance floor.
Bangs or No Bangs?
Some women wear bangs for style, and others wear bangs to cover a perceived flaw such as a prominent forehead. If you're stuck on the idea that you NEED bangs for a certain reason, don't try to go without them on the most important day of your life. You won't feel as confident as you COULD feel. For a flattering alternative to bangs, try framing your face with loose tendrils, which can help soften the look of sculpted styles.
Winter or Summer?
Summer weddings can be quite hot. Even if your reception hall has air conditioning, you could be a wilted mess by the time you get there. If your hair has the tendency to frizz out when it's humid outside, a sculpted updo will stay in place much better than loose curls or waves. You will also feel much cooler with your hair pinned up and away from your neck.
Veil, Flowers or Tiara?
Traditional veils are still quite popular, but so are embellishments such as flowers and tiaras. To help decide which way to go, consider the look and feel of your wedding dress. If your dress is very simple and streamlined, it may require a few more accessories to add style and flair. If your dress is more elaborate, a head full of flowers can send your whole look over the top.
The Importance of Experimentation
None of these decisions should be made a week before the wedding. The next time you go out for an evening on the town, treat yourself to an extended appointment at a hair salon. Wear your wedding hairstyle to a party or social event to gauge how you feel. Ask your man for an honest opinion, and play no games. Be prepared for him to tell you why he likes one style better than another, even if it means he must evaluate which looks minimize certain flaws. If you can't bear to hear your lover's honest opinion, ask your mom. You may already be used to her brutal honesty!
