Small Recreation Center
Let me help you transform a humble banquet room into a sparkling wonderland. Ceiling projection units combined with uplighting and accent lighting can make all the difference in the world.
You'd be surprised by what you can do with some colorful tool from a fabric store. Talk to me about tent rentals! I'll hook you up with a company that doesn't charge as much as most vendors.
A portable plastic pergola can easily be draped with sheets and adorned with fabric and flowers.
Inexpensive Wedding Venues and Event Barns in the Metro Detroit Area - Southeastern Michigan
By Bethany Vale
Don't get me wrong. I've had some wonderful experiences hosting at ultra fancy venues such as the Masonic Temple in Detroit. I love to spend time in luxurious environments, but truthfully, the venue you choose is far from the most important element of the night. It's all about the food, the music and the unique mix of people who come to support you. A year from now, no one will be talking about the grand piano in the lobby or the crystal chandelier overhead. Through space and time, your guests will be most apt to remember the dinner table conversations and dance floor interactions with friends and loved ones.
Money saving Ideas from Former Brides
I will never forget the simple waterfront reception I hosted at Riverside Mariana in Detroit. The family wanted to keep it humble, so they rented a plot of grass across the street from the yacht club where upscale receptions were held. To protect guests from possible rain, they pitched a tent across the river from Belle Isle. The views were breathtaking, and the weather couldn't have been more perfect that day. Just sitting along the shore made me feel happy to be alive. The family called Slows Barbecue to deliver food and used a generator to power my DJ system. The innocent joy surrounding that event was so pervasive I could feel it running through my veins. Ribs, baked beans, roasted potatoes and fruit salad never tasted so good!
A few years ago, I encountered a young bride who had only $1,200 to organize a party for 75 friends and relatives. She rented a large room at Brownstown Recreation Center and turned to her aunts and uncles for help in preparing the food. Each relative brought a crock pot loaded with goodies such as scalloped potatoes, meatballs, mostaccioli and kielbasa with sauerkraut. The bride ordered 100 pieces of Kentucky Fried Chicken and transferred the meat to aluminum chafing pans to keep it warm. To photograph the evening, she hired a media arts student from U of M for $200. The ceremony took place in the same room as the reception. The bride looked radiant in a second hand wedding dress from Isabella's Closet. If she hadn't told me the dressed was used, I would've never guessed!
Often times, when meals are prepared by relatives, the food turns out even better than if it had been prepared by the kitchen staff at a luxurious venue. Homemade mostaccioli tends to be loaded with more meat and sauce. Backyard scalloped potato dishes tend to be prepared from scratch with real potato slices. Meatballs tend to be hand rolled from scratch.
My next low cost wedding story concerns a bride who rented an event barn at Cobblestone Farm in Ann Arbor. To decorate the head table, she used contrasting china pieces acquired from flea markets and thrift shops. She instructed her bridesmaids to pick out different colored pastel gowns because the point of shabby chic is to be imperfectly elegant.
Event barns are gaining popularity as more and more brides discover that it's so much less expensive to organize shabby chic receptions. There was a time when event barns were more popular for fall weddings, but that has changed in the last five years. Some of the best event barns still remain under the radar. The Disabled American Veteran's Barn in Shelby Township won't turn up in most searches for Barn style venues, but let me tell you it's quite large and very well maintained.
